✈️ Book flights by 30 Sept 2026

The constraint isn't the fare — it's inventory. You need ten seats on the same DEN→MTJ flight, and that leg flies A319s and 76-seat E175s. Fares creep; seats vanish.

Absolute latest: 15 October 2026
Getting There

✈️ Flights — EWR ⇄ Montrose (MTJ)

Plan on connecting through Denver. The seasonal EWR→MTJ nonstop does exist for winter 26/27 (UA 2266, A319, roughly 3× weekly, starting Dec 2026) — but its February day-of-week pattern is unconfirmed, and it most likely doesn't line up with a Wednesday-in / Sunday-out trip.

🔎 Before you book a connection

Worth 30 seconds on united.com to check whether the nonstop happens to run on Wed 3 Feb / Sun 7 Feb. If it does, take it. If it doesn't — and it probably doesn't — Denver it is.

🛫 Outbound — Wednesday 3 February 2027

Costs you a ~03:30 wake-up. Buys you a layover nothing short of a cancellation can break.

Lands at the house at the same time as Option A. The whole trade is 2 hours of sleep against a layover with no slack in it.

UA 1483

⚠️ 19:05 is near the last DEN→MTJ of the day (~19:32). A misconnect here means an unplanned Denver overnight — for ten people.

Don't.

Nothing onward — forced overnight in Denver
NO
UA 407
EWR18:49
DEN21:18

There is no onward flight to Montrose. You'd be sleeping in Denver and losing the Thursday morning.

⚠️ The Denver layover rule

Anything under about 1h15 in February is a bad bet — de-icing queues, ground stops, and ten sets of checked skis to re-tag. The one mitigant: United is entirely on Concourse B at DEN, so it's a same-concourse connection. The walk isn't the risk. The bags are.

🛬 Return — Sunday 7 February 2027

Recommended — the half-day

TAKE THIS ONE
UA 352
MTJ13:30
DEN14:45
Then DEN → EWR in the evening (exact Feb-2027 times unconfirmed)

Lifts open 09:00, so this is a genuine half-day on the mountain — and it only works because the house is ski-in/ski-out. No transfer into town, no wasted hour.

Too early

~05:00 departure from Telluride · zero skiing
UA 1003
MTJ07:15

Home earlier, but you'd be leaving the house in the dark and skiing nothing on day four. Hard to justify.

The greedy one

MTJ15:25
DEN16:45

Maximum mountain time. Rough on anyone who works Monday.

🔁 Alternatives worth a price check

Other routings

  • American via DFW — year-round, 12× weekly, strong ex-JFK/LGA/PHL. It's a dogleg, so longer elapsed time.
  • Delta via ATL — DL 1248, 12:36→14:12, 737-800, 3× weekly. Whether it runs Wed/Sun in early Feb is unconfirmed.
  • Southwest — doesn't serve EWR at all. LGA only.

🚗 Fly to Denver and drive?

  • No. 325–335 miles.
  • 6.5–7.5 hours each way.
  • Over mountain passes that can close in February.
  • You'd burn a day of the trip in each direction.

💵 Fares — all estimates

Read this before quoting anyone a number

Live February-2027 fares could not be pulled. Everything below is an estimate based on typical pricing curves for this route, not a quote.

$550–700pp round trip
if booked now – September
$700–800pp round trip
central planning number
$900–1,100+pp round trip
if left until Dec / Jan

👉 Budget $750pp and revise the moment someone pulls a live quote.

💳 Points — don't bother, pay cash

  • United is fully dynamic — there's no domestic award chart to arbitrage.
  • Premier Silver gets no award discount.
  • Ten saver seats in peak February, on A319 and E175 aircraft, is not realistic.
  • Chase UR is worth ~2.05¢ vs United miles at ~1.3¢ — transferring loses value on a fare pricing at 1.2–1.5¢/mile.
  • ✅ Better play: book cash through Chase Travel at 1.25–1.5¢.
Ground Transfer

🚐 Montrose → Telluride

75-minute drive. Good news on timing: Feb 3–7 falls outside every one of Telluride Express's 25% peak-surcharge windows (Dec 20–Jan 5, Jan 15–19, Feb 12–16). We're paying standard rates.

Per-person round trip, at 10 people

Private van — Mountain Limo, 10-pax$1,392 per vehicle. Cheapest option — if the gear fits.

RECOMMENDEDPrivate van — Mountain Limo, 14-pax$2,448 round trip. Best product: everything fits, one vehicle, done.
~$245per person
Rental SUVs × 3Most cost and most hassle. See below.
~$240–270per person

🚨 The capacity trap — read this one

One 10-passenger van will not swallow 10 adults plus 10 ski bags, 10 boot bags and 10 duffels. Book the 14-pax, or a 10-pax van plus an SUV for gear. Confirm luggage capacity in writing when you book — this is the single most common way this goes wrong.

✅ Recommendation: private charter

It's the same money as the shared shuttle and categorically better — door to door, it waits for your flight, no strangers, no timetable. For a group of ten arriving together on one flight, this is not a close call.

🚗 Why not rental cars

  • February is the priciest rental month at MTJ — ~$99–180/day for a 4WD full-size.
  • Winter driving on CO-145 at the end of a travel day.
  • Paid parking in town is scarce.
  • The house is ski-in/ski-out — the cars would sit idle for four days.
  • The free gondola already links Telluride town and Mountain Village.

📞 Who to call

  • Telluride Express / Let's Ride — 888-315-8747. Ask about their 6+ group discount on the private rate.
  • Mountain Limo — the 14-pax quote above.
  • Telluride Car Service — (970) 775-8555.

Whoever you call: get the luggage capacity confirmed in the booking email.

What Happens Next

🎯 Locking in the flights

The house is done. This is the only live task left, and it has a real deadline: book by 30 September 2026, absolute latest 15 October 2026.

🏢 Use the United Group Travel Desk

Ten-plus paying passengers qualifies, and it is purpose-built for exactly this situation — a roster that's very likely but not formally confirmed. You can hold a seat block at a fixed fare with a ~$50–200pp deposit, submit names as late as 72 hours before departure, and there's usually at least one free name change.

⚠️ Third-party sources list the desk as +1-833-894-5333verify that number on united.com rather than trusting it from a blog.

⏳ Don't wait for the schedule announcement

  • The winter 26/27 Colorado Flights Alliance schedule is expected ~October.
  • If United retimes a flight after you've ticketed, a schedule change of more than 30 minutes entitles you to a free rebook.
  • So: waiting costs you seats. Booking early costs you nothing.

🛡️ Two things in your favour

  • US DOT 24-hour rule — free cancellation within 24 hours of booking. Use it to lock a fare while the group confirms.
  • Group desk deposit — holds the fare without full payment.
  • Headcount is very likely 10, not formally confirmed — both of the above are built for precisely that.

📋 The short version

Call the United Group Travel Desk. Hold ten seats on Option A or B outbound and UA 352 back. Put down the deposit. Confirm names later. Separately, book a 14-pax private charter MTJ↔Telluride with luggage capacity confirmed in writing.

💡 Peter's note from the search: houses with >6 bedrooms are rare — bunk mattresses can be moved and doubling-up is fine (Chris Ford shared a room last year, no problem). So 6BR houses comfortably fit the crew.
